Work chuckles

Today:

Colleague: “Hi Chee, can you check whether this person has signed into PALS?”

Me: “Sure, what’s his name.”

Colleague: “Choi.”

Me: “Choi? Can you spell that for me please?”

Colleague: “C-H-O-I.”

Me (giggling a little inside): “Oh okay. And…what’s his first name?”

Colleague: “John.”

“…What’s so funny?”

The most HYPE match ever.

I watched the EVO grand finals at Dave/Bosslogic’s house with Dave and Exis.

I will never forget how I felt during that match. We just kind of looked at each other afterward with that Ohmyfuckinggod face, stunned for an eternity.

THE MACHINE!!! In a way we felt so proud because Poongko kind of made his big international splash by winning Shadowloo Showdown in Australia and going Stone Cold Steve Austin afterwards (though he was already a very famous player). It’s also kind of awesome to see a nickname that Australia (correct me if I’m wrong but I think Igor came up with it) stick to a player and become almost synonymous worldwide with him.

And to think he almost ended up not going to EVO!

I am so happy he went.

FUCK Yun.

Street Fighter x Tekken Wallpaper series by Bosslogic

While we have all been busy watching EVO (Tom made top 32 in Marvel!) Dave has been hard at work making more beautiful wallpapers.

This time the spotlight are on the characters in the upcoming SFxTekken. I’m not sure how much I will take to the game, but being a hornbag I fully appreciate the inclusion of Poison.

Good shit to Dave, and please check out the full post on Shadowloo with all the images.

Introducing: Cafe Id! By Kevin aka Burnout

So Kevin after being Poongko’s translator at SS2k11, has gotten to know the Korean FGC a lot better since then. He wrote an article about Cafe Id, their home base in Korea, and it is one of the most awesome places you could visit as a fighting game player.

He asked me to put it up on Shadowloo, and here as well, so here is an excerpt of the article by Burnout, and check out Shadowloo for the full article!

Hello, my name is Kevin ‘Burnout’.

It was an honour to be the translator for Poongko ‘The Machine’ at Shadowloo Showdown 2K11. Since SS2K11, I have been able to learn a lot of information about the Korean Fighting Game Community from Poongko.

Pantene Pro V (PPV) Burnout, Poongko and Gooteckksss

Recently. I was contacted by the owner (Kensouzzang) of a venue called the ‘Cafe Id’ which is their ‘hangout’ place with gaming equipment.

They also have streaming equipment, and stream their tournaments all over the world. I was fascinated by the concept of the venue because this kind of ‘business plan’ would not normally be something easily accepted by your local council or government. Not that they would deny such a commercial venue, but it might be something that the modern government social workers would look at you with a funny face for.

I will get straight to the point and give a quick overview:

Here is the quick view of the counter of Cafe Id.

Peanuts and… ALCOHOL???

Check out Shadowloo for the full article.

On a unrelated note, I spent the whole day at Spoony’s house watching EVO today. It was fun watching a stream with a buddy and not by myself at home like I usually do. I think I am suffering from a Fei Long overload now…

Bluehouse Arcade Log 28 June 2011 to 28 July 2011: A month of getting my ass whupped

So I bought a little black notebook for taking notes during Shadowloo Showdown 2k11 so that I could write a detailed recap.

Turns out, the event was so hectic, stressful and fun, that I ended up not using it at all. And my memories of SS2k11 have turned into this big mushball of happenings that is too incoherent to turn into a recap.

About the only useful thing I wrote on my notebook was; “What is a Gootecks?”

The day after Shadowloo Showdown, I went to Bluehouse arcade and ended up playing Mooseking and Zerolance. I whipped out my little black book…and decided to write down my wins and losses.

So I started thinking it might be useful to keep a log of my arcade matches as I basically play at Bluehouse every work day. I could track my progress, see how do I against certain characters and players, and monitor my win rate.

So one full month later, I present my log from the 28th of June 2011, to the 28th of July 2011.

Full log sheet and notes after the jump!

ST (S*it Talk) Pilot Episode

Now maybe because I’m a boring kind of guy, but I’ve never really understood what is so funny about trolling people, or shit talking.

I often think it’s a waste of time, and sometimes kinda stupid. Here in Melbourne, we don’t really have a shittalking/moneymatching/trollingyourfellowman culture that seems to be quite prevalent in Sydney.

So I won’t lie; sometimes the antics from the Sydney community throw me for a loop. It’s probably because I  myself don’t really understand the fun or motivation behind it, that I often find myself standing there and thinking, “Why would you do that?”

But what I do admire from Sydney is that by Melbourne-bashing, shit-talking and trolling each other, is their singular cohesive identity as a crowd.

I remember at SS2k11, every time Furyblitz would hit a rekka, the Sydney guys would scream out curdling Bruce Lee yowls. And while they call each other free all the time, they all seem to be laughing all the time.

Maybe Melbourne is just more laid-back as a city. But whatever the reason, Sydney as a community seem more loud, obnoxious, and willing to butt heads with each other. But at least they do it as a group.

And is that such a bad thing?

It reminds me of the East Coast in the US. Back in Vanilla, post Bar-fights II, it could easily be said that East Coast was the dominant coast in SSFIV. They beat the West Coast team at Bar-Fights II, sans a extremely hype Demon from Ed Ma, in extremely convincing fashion.

And most of the people on their five-man team didn’t even like each other!

The guys from the East Coast shit-talk and troll each other endlessly. They have huge rivalries between themselves, and bear lengthy grudges.

Maybe that’s what it takes.

Maybe you need hate and anger to reach the next level in Street Fighter. You need SALT!

Then of course Valle did his whole motivatory speech. The West Coast levelled up. Justin Wong moved to Cali.

We might see some of that rivalry at this year’s EVO MvC3 5 on 5, but I think “beat the Japanese” seems to be a more dominant feeling than any regional rivalry.

But anyway, Sydney. Now I don’t really understand the Sydney scene too much, and maybe they don’t understand us too much as well. Maybe it’s just a clash of cultures.

So when I sat down to listen to the pilot of Shit Talk that Igor did with Acedizl, KG and Bomb, I really didn’t know what to expect.

I came out of it with a greater understanding of what makes a Sydney player think. I kind of understand a bit more why they do some of the things that they do.

And I found myself enjoying it. It might be vulgar and rambling, and all over the place, but hey. I love Alphaism Radio. So this is totally right up my alley.

And I guess it’s nice to see some collaboration between Sydney and Melbourne for once. So I hope to see future episodes from them, good work guys.

The Nightingale and the Rose

“She said that she would dance with me if I brought her red roses,” cried the young Student; “but in all my garden there is no red rose.”

From her nest in the holm-oak tree the Nightingale heard him, and she looked out through the leaves, and wondered.

“No red rose in all my garden!” he cried, and his beautiful eyes filled with tears. “Ah, on what little things does happiness depend! I have read all that the wise men have written, and all the secrets of philosophy are mine, yet for want of a red rose is my life made wretched.”

“Here at last is a true lover,” said the Nightingale. “Night after night have I sung of him, though I knew him not: night after night have I told his story to the stars, and now I see him. His hair is dark as the hyacinth-blossom, and his lips are red as the rose of
his desire; but passion has made his face like pale ivory, and sorrow has set her seal upon his brow.”

Lesson in Hong Kong fighters- Cross Counter Asia

I remember when I first met Kevin back at the Shadowloo compound, I asked him; so who’s the best player in Singapore?

He listened for a second, then pointed at Xian who was snoozing on the couch, “This guy right here!”

Little did I know that this quiet guy who I always noticed just sleeping on the couch, (probably sleeping off a all-nighter SF training session) would go on to make an incredible splash at Shadowloo Showdown, placing top 8 in a very, very stacked bracket , and being one of the only two players that weekend to beat Mago 2D God in tournament that weekend.

I didn’t make the connection at the time, but this was the very same guy who made Ryan Hart crack up in Gooteck’s old Dreamhack podcast way back in 09.

I should’ve paid more attention.

What an impressive showing for Singapore. It’s kind of funny, I was born in Singapore, and grew up in Malaysia. I came here to Melbourne back in 02, discovered the fighting game scene much later on, and fell in love with it. Meanwhile, apparently back home, they have like fifty arcade machines and a booming scene, and producing monsters like Xian!

I remember back in late 09, I was back home in Yio Chu Kang for a week. My hands were itching for some Street Fighter. So I went down to Ang Mo Kio Hub, and asked the uncle at the game shop there (which I later bought my TE at a very un-Australian price from) where I could find the nearest arcade with SFIV in it.

He directed me to this arcade just outside Ang Mo Kio Hub, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this small neighbourhood arcade already had like six SFIV machines, and I had a blast just spending the afternoon there playing away. (I got beasted by a Ryu-playing old chinese man in a wrinkled white tank top.) I even came back the next day to play as well.

It never crossed my mind that if a neighbourhood mall could have an arcade like that, what about arcades in the city centre or in the really big malls?

And later I came back during Battle Medley Singapore, where I discovered that my old childhood friend Yu Cheng had become Farpenoodle of the Singapore scene. And I learnt about Bugis and the other hotspots, and witnessed how sick their scene was, even watching Dixon beat Momochi.

All this time I never knew. It took me coming over to another country to discover the fighting game scene when all this time it was staring me in the face!

But good shit to Xian and the Singapore scene, I hope more great things happen for you guys.

(Even though I will always cheer for Malaysia in Singapore vs. Malaysia exhibitions.)

So enough of my rambling, it’s time to talk about this really excellent video done by Xian and Zhi from Singapore. It’s really interesting to see Cross Counter spread their roots- to South-East Asia of all places.

I really, really liked this video. I learned a ton about Fei and Yun from this video, and Xian and Zhi really take their time to pause at every scenario and talk about the options, the frame data, the mind games at every opportunity.

This is my favourite kind of match analysis, and even though some people might find it dry, I personally love this type of in-depth analysis and I wish more top players would put out stuff like this.

Great work guys, and I want to see more in the future!

Can’t Patch This Podcast- Episode 4

Can’t Patch This Podcast Ep. 4 was released by Iplaywinner last week…

But I just listened to it today. The intro was so, so fucking epic. I am so jealous!

I must have rewound the intros to the last three shows like ten times, but they even topped that this time. Awesome stuff.

Always love this show, everyone should check it out. My favourite podcast to listen to right now by far.

Hilarious and awesome.

Labbing with Hakan and Taskmaster

Ever since I started playing in the arcades, I have been putting less and less time in training mode. On the plus side, I feel that my execution is now less training-room dependent, and I feel more comfortable sitting down to play without warming up these days than ever before.

On the down side, I’ve been completely neglecting my Hakan. I haven’t even gotten his new BnBs down, and there should be no excuse for that.

Now that Shadowloo Showdown is over and I have a lot more free time, I have been using some of the time to brush up on my Hakan.

Some things to practice

Corner setup with Hakan

From SRK:

– The direction the opponent has to block is random. Sometimes, the opponent can block in either direction. So he holds forward, he blocks it, holds backward, he still blocks. Confusing, I know. It’s all to do with the slightest changes in your timing. Other cases, you’ll cross up, but if the opponent guesses right, he gets hit, for big damage. And other times, it just works as a normal cross up. That’s a serious guessing game.

– Beats all standard reversals, lp gets hit, other versions whiff, free punish, etc

– The opponent can backdash. However, he’s vulnerable if he does. So it might be worth going into jabs after the HK.

List of corner setups

HP/EX Rocket: low short as a timing mechanism seems to work pretty well. The key is to execute the low short right as they land and then to catch with your opponent at the very beginning of their get up animation
MP Rocket: I’ve managed to have some success executing 2 standing fwd kicks in quick succession which positions Hakan perfectly for the crossup HK
LP Rocket: Dash fwd twice. Timing’s a bit tricky as it has to be done relatively quickly but it’s not too difficult
Oil Dive: Dash fwd twice. Same as LP Rocket
Flying Oil Spin: Dash fwd twice. Same as LP Rocket
Forward throw: Dash fwd twice. Same as LP Rocket
Oil slide without a follow up: Regular jump, I tend to throw out a quick st. jab for timing purposes
FADCing oil slide without a follow up with a forward dash: low short, same as HP Rocket
FADCing oil slide without a follow up with a back dash: One forward dash

Typical sequence:

HP oil rocket, backdash, HK dive, forward dash x 2, cross up into slide combo, is around 75% of Ryu’s health.

Meaty slide setup:

Slide+ press,backdash, lp slide

Or

Slide+ press, backdash, RH DDT (delay slightly)

Focus attack resets

Sweet Spot Dive (Used to beat Ryu’s MP DP in super, now loses to it. Wonder if I should feel happy or sad about that.)

Dropping the dog

I’ve also taken the time to learn some Taskmaster.

New Ryu tech

So I was at Couchwarriors today, and after reading this from the SRK Ryu thread:

http://shoryuken.com/forum/index.php?threads/ryu-general-discussion-combos-strats-frame-data-etc.48774/page-39

I decided to test this out on more characters. In the thread they did it on Gouken but so far I’ve found it works on:

Gouken

Honda

Dhalsim

Abel

Dudley

jHP csHK cHP EX tatsu (midscreen) 394 damage.

jHP csHK cHP EX tatsu HP DP (corner) 424 damage.

jHP csHK cHP EX tatsu Ultra (corner) 576 damage. (On Sim 573 damage. Huh?)

I tested it on the majority of the cast but not everyone, mostly just the usual fat suspects. Did not work on Oni, Sagat, Gief, Rufus etc.

It didn’t work on Blanka and Chun, but because of the way it hit, there might be some potential there. Maybe swap cHP for cMP or EX tatsu for super/EX fireball/HK tatsu. Have to do some more testing.

But anyway this should likely be Ryu’s new most optimal punish since fHP has been nerfed in damage.

Problem is, you will most probably only land this off a dizzy (which makes it even better because you avoid the 20% scaling from the Focus attack from Focus Attack fHP combos), so most probably it will only be very helpful for Dhalsim. But hey, I’m not complaining. More damage on Sim!

Will update after I do more testing, and maybe tinker with some variants, such as cMP sweep after csHK.

Updated Notes: Adding the DP in the corner with Dhalsim seems pretty difficult. Ultra works off the EX tatsu though.

Similar to Sim, DP on Honda doesn’t work in the corner. Doing cmp EX tatsu causes the EX tatsu to whiff. clp EX tatsu works though. Maybe plink chp~lp for Honda? Ultra works fine. Get 577 damage though. Wonder what is causing the damage variations. chp Hk tatsu and cmp Hk tatsu works on Honda, 366 and 342 damage respectively. As a reference, FA lvl 3 fhp chp dp does 365 damage.

jHP csHK cHP lk tatsu DP works on Gouken in the corner. 382 damage.

Don’t be a Scrub Podcast Episode 15: Gootecks and Mike Ross

Hi guys, Shadowloo Showdown 2K11 has finally come and gone. And Spider Muttons Productions © 2010 are back with our solitary Shadowloo Showdown 2k11 interview.

Our guests this time are none other than Cross Counter/Complexity’s own Gootecks and Mike Ross.

Gootecks is someone who Igor and I have looked up to for a long time as a Street Fighter media/business trailblazer since the days of the Denjin podcast, and of course Mike Ross is simply the most handsome man in America.

A bit of sad news; due to work related issues, Igor has had to take a step back from the fighting game community, and that also means we have to shut down the podcast for now. He will still be going to EVO and will be doing interviews and updates from there, so follow him at his new twitter account: https://twitter.com/#!/Verbosemute

Hopefully things will go well for my buddy in real life, and we will be able to continue this series in the future. But if not, what better way to go out than with this double bill of international SFIV superstars that is Gootecks and Mike.

Big thanks to Ryan and Mike for doing this with us; they were extremely tired and run down by the end of the day but yet found the strength to squeeze in this hour with us. Igor and I really appreciate it guys. Also, thanks to Bosslogic for another fantastic banner.

Before we start the podcast, I want to give a shoutouts to everyone who made Shadowloo Showdown a success, it was a real community effort. And I personally apologise for not making more effort to make the rounds and to talk to people like I usually do, the whole week really wore me out.

So guys, be sure to check out the full results for SS 2k11 here.

Watch match videos from the tournament at their YouTube channel.

And finally for the matches that you missed, check out the stream archive.

And of course, check out Mike and Ryan over at the Cross Counter channel and subscribe if you’re a fan.

Alright, as usual this is a two-part interview, we have the audio podcast available for download, and if you prefer you can just read the transcript of the interview below.

Edit: Our server was down for a while due to the huge surge of traffic from Eventhubs. The link is up and working again now, our apologies for the setback. If you still experience any difficulties, try our backup link below.

Don’t be a Scrub Podcast Episode 15: Gootecks and Mike Ross

Spidercarnage: Okay, welcome everyone.

Today we are in the CQ hotel. It’s Shadowloo Showdown…God knows what day. But this is near the end of the event. And we have two very special guests with us today. All the way from the other side of the world. Definitely the people who follow the fighting game community have heard of these two.

And it’s Mike Ross and Gootecks.

Mike Ross: What’s going on man. Thanks for having us.

Gootecks: What’s up guys.

S: Thank you for coming down.

G: No problem, thank you for having us.

Muttonhead: Alright we’ll just get right into it, because they need to sleep!

S: It is quite late, yeah. (It is past 1 AM and they have an  8 AM flight.)

1-      M: Yeah. So who came up with the idea of Crosscounter?

MR: That would be the man known as Gootecks.

G: Yeah um, we were fortunate enough to run into Machinima. Basically walked right into their offices by mistake.

S: Oh really?

G: Not by mistake but by fate! As it were.

And they spotted us, and they were like, hey, wanna do some Super Street Fighter IV videos? This was before Super came out in April of 2010. And we were like sure, that sounds amazing.

So we did some videos for them and over the course of the next several weeks they realized; hey these guys actually know what they’re doing.

MR: And for some reason people actually keep watching these videos.

G: Can’t quite figure out why.

MR: Yeah. So maybe if we bring them on board they might want to work with us.

G: Right.

MR: I guess then they said; hey Gooteckkkss. Come up with something. Continue reading

[Melb] Chris’ Club House R10 08-07-11: Special Fundraiser- Shadowloo for EVO!

Hi guys. I generally try not to post my CCH stuff here, but I figured this event definitely warrants a post.

This is going to be a special fundraiser event for the Shadowloo guys to go to EVO. As you know, the whole SS crew had plans to go to EVO this year, but SS kind of skuppered their plans financially.

All the SS guys have done so much for the community, putting in thousands and thousands of their own dollars into the event, and burning out their own bodies in the process. (Ali blacked out once in the airport.)

The least we can do is try to support them in whatever way we can.

All the venue money for this event is going to go to the SS EVO fund. We are going to have door prizes, food and drink as well.

Remember guys, sending these guys over will do a lot of good for our community. Building business relationships with the Americans, solidifying the great base that Dave/Bosslogic has done with all his good work. I’m sure Ali will do a lot of media work there as well.

Also, send donations through paypal:
