Fight Night: The Melbourne Street Fighter Arcade Community

Short documentary on the Melbourne FGC by Sean Lee. Good shit Sean! (If I remember correctly I remember being salty that you bodied me in Marvel as well.)

We need more pieces like this which offer simple exposition of the Oz FGC that casual viewers can understand easily. I know I’m guilty of writing too many pieces that have too many “low forward low strong OS DP” for its own good etc.

More Shadowloo Showdown 2k11 content incoming! Just let me have a chance to recover, I fell sick during the weekend and am only just recovering.

Don’t be a Scrub Podcast Episode 14: Humanbomb

Hi everyone! Spider Muttons Productions © 2010 are back with our final pre-SS show.

We have a very special guest for this episode, and he’s someone we’ve wanted to interview for a very long time.

He’s been the best player in Sydney for a very long time, holding it down with his Vanilla Ryu and now, AE Yang. His clashes with Toxy over the years have been epic every single time, and we’re very lucky to have these two players, the Valle vs. Choi of Australia.

Of course, we’re talking about none other than Sydney’s Humanbomb! (AKA Johnny Cheng.)

We conducted this interview over Skype at Igor’s house in Geelong. We thought it went swimmingly, however Skype decided to %&* us up the arse, and a large part of the recording’s audio was FUBAR. That’s also why we had to delay releasing this episode. We’re going to release a partial audio file of the remaining usable audio, and we hope that this transcript will help make up for the audio.

I personally was pretty bummed about it all, and I know Igor put a ton of effort into the audio editing. Ah well.

We also recorded an intro that survived without any incident. And I hope you guys enjoy the interview!

P.S. Don’t forget to check out Bomb’s blog at http://humanbomb-sf4.blogspot.com/

Don’t be a Scrub Podcast Episode 14: Humanbomb

Spidercarnage: Today, we are in, well, actually my bedroom.

Mutton: The fourth studio.

S: Yeah, the fourth studio.

My bedroom.

And we have a very special guest with us today.

A man we actually wanted to interview since the last Shadowloo Showdown. But with all the moving and everything else we just haven’t gotten around to it.

And it’s Mr. Humanbomb.

Welcome.

Humanbomb: Hi.

M: How you doing, Johnny.

H: Good.

S: So do you actually prefer Humanbomb, or do you prefer Johnny.

H: Uh doesn’t matter. Up to you.

M: So what do your friends call you.

H: Johnny.

S: The destroyer. Continue reading

Don’t be a Scrub Podcast Episode 13: Akira

Hi everyone! Spider Muttons Productions © 2010 are back with our latest show.

Our guest this time is one of Australia’s top players, and “hidden dragon” (He doesn’t go to console tournaments.) He went to Japan to learn disgusting Vanilla Sagat, and came back to tear us all a new one. He has a very unique mindset to learning fighting games, is very candid with his opinions, has a lot to say about the game and our community, and is even  the rare Asian capable of growing an afro!

All your $$ are belong to me

Of course we’re talking about Akira!

This interview was conducted at Deakin University on the 12th of June. (AKA the Deakin meetup where we all brought sleeping bags to stay up to watch Toxy on the Revelations stream.)

Akira has the rare position of being within both the Japanese and the Australian fighting game community, and he has a lot to share about his experience with both scenes. An old-school 3rd Strike player, he’s come full circle by playing disgusting Yun in SSFIV: Arcade Edition.

He was also our translator for our Mago interview, and he did a great job, for which Igor and I are very grateful.

Now, this episode will be audio-only, I will not be doing a transcript for this interview.

Igor and I have decided to move away from the podcast-transcript format. Especially for the Shadowloo Showdown interviews, with so many guests, doing transcripts for every one would simply take too long, and we would probably still be releasing SS2k11 interviews by the time SS2k12 comes around.

We also wanted to get this episode out before Shadowloo Showdown this weekend. So our next interview will probably be our last transcript for a while. (We did the interview for our next guest before Akira.)

Regardless, I hope you guys enjoy this interview. I think we covered a lot of interesting topics, and once again I apologise for not having the text version this time.

Immediate AE notes

Ryu:

F+HP is down from 120 damage to 90 damage.

F+ HP, dHP, SRK is 300 damage.

Close standing HK links to SRK midscreen. Must link late. csHK is 110 damage, so jHP, csHK, SRK is 330 damage. Compare this to jHP, cMP, cHP, SRK which is 337 damage.

F+HP, cMP, cMP, cMK, tatsu no longer works on Chun. Or at least I couldn’t get it after a couple of tries. Looks like cMK range nerf may affect some combos. Still works on Blanka.

sMK is 80 damage.

Nerfie nerf nerf.

edit: JHP, csHK cHP EX Tatsu works on Gouken.

Tried csHK on Viper wakeup in the arcades and it works great. Beat a lot of her options outright and traded with whatever it didn’t beat. Got free linked DP afterwards to boot!

MP srk has one more frame of invincibility. About the only change I like in AE Ryu.

Hakan:

New BnB: sLP, sLP, fLK, slide is 217 damage!

Easy BnB: sLP, sLP, cLP, slide is 195 damage.

Must hold down the DDT button to cancel into coward crouch.

Oil can be buffered up to 50 seconds!

Yay now can I finally start doing training room for my AE Hakan.

Will update with more notes as I find more things.

edit: LK Dive/DDT builds the same meter as HK in case you want to do Dive cancel coward crouch for meter.

sHP hurtbox got reduced. Better anti-air.

Sweet-spot Dive as compiled by Mordie-Kai for SRK no longer works on Ryu as MP DP has an additional frame of invincibility.

Questioning the myth

Warning: Completely unrelated to SF story incoming.

Recently, my friend posted a video of Stripfighter the Dan player beating Daigo Umehara in an online match on his facebook page.

To which I say, big whoop.

Everyone loses. Even Daigo.

But what really grinds/ground? my gears was that in the comments, somebody said, “This can’t be Daigo. Daigo said that he uses his friend’s account to play online. This must be his friend, not Daigo.”

Now, I’m a stats guy. I love crunching numbers, facts, percentages. I hate perpetuated stereotypes or myths such as; “Daigo doesn’t ever lose a game in Street Fighter. IT’S DAIGO!”

This is Street Fighter. People lose; that’s the only way you get better. Don’t make excuses for Daigo, I’m sure he doesn’t make excuses for himself.

Anyway, back to my main point.

The biggest myth that I hate is KOBE BRYANT IS THE MOST CLUTCH PLAYER IN THE NBA.

Now, for those of you that don’t know, I’m a huge basketball fan and a even bigger Laker hater. And I detest Kobe Bean Bryant with every cell in my body.

When I bring up the stats that back up my point about Kobe being vastly overrated in the clutch, and that too many highlight clips of his makes have somehow brainwashed the public into states of selective amnesia about his misses, I get a lot of counter-arguments.

Such as:

“Oh the GMs and head coaches all universally pick him as the guy they’d want taking the last shot. You know more than a NBA GM?”

“Kobe wants the ball more than anyone else. Nothing can stop him in the clutch.”

“Look at this top ten clips of his gamewinners KOBEISTHEBESTKTHANX” Continue reading

And this is why you don’t go to Wednesday Night Fights when I’m there dude…

First saw this on Iplaywinner.

Both these guys are so freakin’ funny.

Combofriend just keeps laughing and cracking me up.

But seriously, Combofiend’s She-Hulk is so creative and such a joy to watch. So much technology that I could incorporate into my own game.

Such as:

Omitting the M from the initial air series and doing H, S as slow as possible to make the otg torpedo run cancel relaunch easier. That way I can cease relying on TACC for my relaunch which is not guaranteed on some characters. Should make this my new BnB.

Actually using assists in She-Hulk combos for more damage and for dirty, dirty resets. That Spencer assist after two launches to set up the grab after the hitstun decay is really sick. Not sure I can set up anything like that on my team though.

Using assists to trigger post-KO character fly-in blockstun to set up the command grab rather than doing it with She-Hulk, with a jump L for example. (When a character comes in, he’s immune to grabs unless he touches a button or blocks.)

Doing combos after a connected air H. (I never practice it.)

Raw tag after command grab to reset combo scaling. (Started practicing it.)

I think I like Combofiend’s team a lot more than my own team. My team gets decidedly worse as my members die off, culminating in the wonderful glory that is Tron on anchor.

Combofiend’s team seems to get stronger as you kill his team members, and he can swap around his team order willy-nilly, and still get assist-based combos, DHCs, and multiple assist-based setups such as Spencer/Task high-She-Hulk assist low no matter who is on point.

Now that is a TEAM. I’m still not entirely convinced the old MVC2 formula of battery, meter user and assist works that well in MVC3.

I guess that’s where this game can be really fun; building a team, creating strategy and just being creative with it. I really enjoy this part of the game, thinking about team-building and strategies even though this game really does drive me kind of crazy.

P.S. Sorry about not putting up any new original content in the past week. Igor and I are currently working hard on something.

Update!: Part 2 is up.

OHN9 Top 8 Match Videos!

OHN9 has come and gone, and Humanbomb (Ryu, Sakura) has taken the SSFIV crown. The Queensland guys have proved their game was as good as their talk with Tom taking the MVC3 crown. I’m impressed with the QLD players, and not so hopeful that the shining hope of Melbourne Marvel- Ali, can match up to them 😛

Congratulations to the winners, and good shit to the organisers for making OHN9 happen.

Anyway, Hebretto is in the process of uploading the top 8 videos to the Ozhadou Youtube channel.

I’m really looking forward to checking out Humanbomb’s Ryu in action again (I seem to be starving for top level Ryu videos since AE dropped; I slurped up all of Valle’s matches at UFGT like a delicious meal), but for now check out the MVC3 GFs.

…Maybe I shouldn’t have dropped Wolverine…

Update: SSFIV top 8 is up.

Match breakdown: Muttons vs. Rocky

I very seldom have tournament match footage to look at because I suck and usually go out way before people start recording matches.

But thanks to Burnout for recording this match from the last Box Hill ranbat I went to. (I went 0-2, as mentioned in Taking Stock.)

In this match I lose to a Yun player named Rocky. Let’s break out the video analysis!

(Note: I wish had Yun frame data, I remember seeing it somewhere before. It would be pretty useful for this exercise.)

1st Round

– I start off being my usual tentative self and let him set the pace of the match. Not good.

0.06- This is a recurring theme. He misses his DP and I fail to punish. I have very little Yun experience, so I am not used to punishing his DP. It looks like the main problem with it is the sheer distance he lands from me, probably meaning that a dash towards punish would be optimal.

0.09- I have no idea whether this dash punch is a good reversal. It counterhit me, so did it beat my low strong? Continue reading

The return of the Iplaywinner Podcast… and Ali

I loved the old Iplaywinner podcasts.

They had dope soundtracks in their intros and outros, talked a ton of shit, always spoke their mind, and were unafraid to delve into touchy subjects.  And in general I just love the particular brand of humour that permeates the Iplaywinner streams and site. Uncouth, NSFW and raw.

Spidercarnage sent me the link this morning, and I’m really excited to see the return of the Iplaywinner podcast.

Check it out here:

http://iplaywinner.com/news/2011/5/17/cant-patch-this-podcast-episode-1.html

And of course Ali has just released the newest episode of the X Report.

There was some sort of coup going on this week that resulted in GC Chris replacing Pyro as the co-host. If you wanna show support to Pyro there’s  only one option…

BOYCOTT!! BOYCOTT!!!BOOOYYCOTTT!!!

I’m just kidding. Chris did a great job. And I’m sure Pyro will be back soon.

Update:

Breaking news. Toxy is going to Revelations!

Big congratulations to Mike. This is what Igor and I were talking about in our interview with Toxy when we were hoping that he would get to travel more with his new sponsorship.

It’s really exciting to see that it is actually happening now, and Toxy will only level up as a result. And hopefully bring back a ton of new strats for us 😛 I’m also very interested to see how he fares against other Marvel players overseas.

I’m sure he will do great, and it will be a pretty cool experience to finally get to watch an Australian player live on an international stream!

Remembering OHN

I know sometimes on this site I can appear a bit myopic. I put up a ton of Melbourne reports and media, but sometimes neglect what is happening in other states.

Well in my defence, I do live in Melbourne, so the easiest thing for me to write about is about what is happening around me.

I still don’t know too many people from the other states. And the only real chance I have to meet them are at the big tournaments, the BAMs and the Shadowloo Showdowns. Unfortunately I’m usually really busy at those tournaments! But I still get the occasional chance to sit down and talk to people.

The out-of-staters that I have met have all been very friendly to me. At the last Shadowloo Showdown, I got to talk extensively to people like Goodpart, Mooseking, Byebi, Ace, and many more. Other people I only got to exchange a few words with were players like Bomb, Robsux, Hebretto, but they all shook my hand and were really warm to me.

I sometimes forget there is more to Australian Street Fighter than Melbourne.

We’ve been extremely lucky to have the rise of SFIV coincide with the rise of Couchwarriors and Shadowloo over here, as well as having many members of the community step up big time, like CCH Chris, Igor, Bugsimus and GC Chris.

Our local scene has been growing and growing, and it’s been a hell of a ride.

But the other states all have so much to offer. I hear great things about the Marvel players in Queensland. I hear amazing things across the waters about the New Zealand scene. And most recently from Sydney I hear the discussions and rumbling about the upcoming OHN.

Now anyone is our scene knows there’s a huge rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne. Just like there is between the residents of Melbourne and Sydney as well. Continue reading

Mike is a beast

And the Shadowloo guys are pretty damn beastly at making videos as well.

Yo Rossco, when’s your Melbourne Fimble Fest Highlights video coming out? I’m gonna be a superstar in that video…

Taking stock

Last Thursday’s Box Hill Ranbat has been my first arcade tournament in a while. Work commitments and some extra responsibilities on the weekend has kind of forced to me to choose between the events I go to. And I will almost always choose the event that allows me to get the most practice time and casuals in, which generally means going to the console events over the Thursday arcade events.

But it was still fun. Sitting there playing the “Spot the differences” puzzle games with Zero and chilling with everybody kind of revitalised me a little. I miss coming out to arcade tournaments. I was really tired after work, but the atmosphere actually really re-energised me and cleared my head nicely.

But I still went 0 and 2.

It looks like my recent long streak of going out 0 and 2 in tournaments is not in any danger of stopping. I lost to Nickerz and Rocky the Yun player this time, and to Somniac and Ali at Couchwarriors.  And I think I got only two wins in the last three weeks of Marvel tournaments.

I suck big, hairy donkey balls.

In light of all this, I conclude that despite my attempts to up my personal practice regimen, I’m still really shit at Marvel, and most definitely still shit at SF4.

I’ve been bleeding money at the arcades, and to be honest, don’t really feel that I am improving all that much despite playing every day.

Jeff will always come up to me and cheerfully tell me that I’ve improved; but I tend not to believe him since he normally sits down right after and smashes me. The fact that all the good players like Akira, Jeff and Kilok have been giving me mercy rounds at Bluehouse is really nice of them, but reinforces the fact that I suck at this game.

Quite often I would lose eight or ten games straight at lunchtime, and glumly walk back to the office going through all my mistakes and fimbles in my head.

Oh well. I will keep on grinding. I may be a pessimistic bastard, but I know at least I have persistence.

In the meantime, I have been trying to work hard on my Marvel game in training mode when at home.

I have been getting bodied in every single Marvel tournament I’ve entered so far. I’ve lost to three straight Zero players as well. Derrace totally bodied me at Deakin, followed by a Zero player I don’t recognise at CW, and Burnout.

I find myself lost on defence against Zero. Continue reading
