Please check it out and give them your support and feedback! I look forward to more and better things in the future from Ali and his crew. Good shit, Ali.

Being a Sentinel Scrub…with videos!

This is the second part to my post Being a Sentinel Scrub.

I got horribly exposed at CW as a fraud and a scrub in Marvel and SSFIV respectively.

Oh well, thanks to Bugs and the Shadowloo guys for putting up the vids. I think this is the only tournament footage anywhere in the world…of me actually winning. What a rare archaeological find.

Anyway, you’re not going to find any actual good gameplay moments from me here, just big LOL moments:

Burnout clearly is a better player and has a better Ammie than me to boot. He never misses his bnb, even though he flies over the body of the opponent mid air combo and still manages to autocorrect the super in the right direction! (I always get slow super.)

LOL moment:

1- 3:56 I try to do a shuffle, and somehow get a lvl 3. And it somehow hits. I was not being ume, it was dumb, blind luck.

2- Every game when I get outplayed and just mash launcher with Sentinel for the win.

I play Cactus on PSN a bit, so at least we both know what to expect from each other’s teams.

LOL moment:

5:03: Oh shitdarkphoenixisoutandisrampagingthroughmyteamohgodohgod…wait she just ate one random super and died?

The end of my run. Not too many lol moments here, because Carnage just owns me 🙂

Edit: I almost forgot, check out Shadowloo’s playlist of the top 8 to see some actual good players!

Super Turbo Saturdays

I’m really digging this new series by Seb and Damdai.

Super Turbo is a game very close to my heart. Primarily because I never really knew how to play it when I was a kid. I only knew how to throw fireballs, and I only found out how to do a dragon punch when I was 18!

I also remember playing Super SF II: The New Challengers on SNES and wondering why the fuck I couldn’t execute a super no matter what input I tried.  It’s Super Street Fighter II right?!? That’s how much of a scrub I was.

I remember  as a kid, watching people play ST at the arcades and getting my mind blown by low forward fireball (you can do that?!?!), SPDs and Supers. (At that time I thought the motion for an SPD had to be like up down up down left left right a b select start.)

So I always wanted to be just like those guys at the arcade and always really wanted to learn the game. And with SF4 really bringing me into the fighting game scene, I’ve finally taken the time to slowly teach myself ST by playing HD remix on the side. (I know, I know.) Videos like Seb and Damdai’s are exactly what I want to watch, and I find them very, very interesting. (Especially the T Hawk video.) Great work guys, and I hope the series will run for a long time.

Now that Marvel is out, learning ST might take a back burner to things for now. But I think I will try to continue to learn ST no matter however slowly it might take me, hopefully for the next ten years.

Don’t be a Scrub Podcast Episode 10: Mooseking

Hi everybody! Spider Muttons Productions © 2010 is back with our tenth episode. We have a special guest who just happened to pop by Melbourne for a few days. He’s from South Australia, and it’s Mooseking!

Mooseking is one of the community pillars of the South Australia scene and being intricately involved with the Australian gaming scene, has a lot of interesting things to say about fighting games and our community as a whole. We talk about AE, MVC3, Australian video game shows and a lot more.

Thanks to Mooseking for sitting down with us, and even helping to transcribe the interview! One of the reasons that we tried to get this podcast out as fast as possible is because he plugs a tournament called Floodwar on the 12th of March held in Adelaide Uni. Proceeds will go to helping victims of the flood, and be sure to check that out.

Edit: I almost forgot, big thanks to Zerokill for providing the transition from intro to main body of our interview!

Mooseking at Shadowloo Showdown. By Shadowloo.

Spidercarnage: Hello everyone, we’re here at our fourth recording location; Nando’s across from Box Hill.

Muttonhead: AKA our second studio.

S: Yeah heh. Our second studio’s my car.

M: Yeah, so this is our third studio.

S: That has to be Deakin. And our fourth one is this.

Mooseking: I’ll have to correct you, because we’re across the road from Bluehouse, not Box Hill.

I’m a freaking tourist and I know this town better than you man.

S: It’s true. And speaking of that, today our special guest is Mr. Mooseking from South Australia. Continue reading

GET HYPE!! Shadowloo Showdown 2k11 guest list revealed!

Wow. I figured that it would be maybe four people this time. Not Gamerbee, Tokido, Mago the original three…PLUS Kindevu, Momochi and Choco Blanka! And probably even more guests to be announced. I want Mike “My Honda is a ten” Ross to come down.

GET HYPE!!!!

But you know what, to be honest I’m not that hype as last year. Lemme explain why.

After I saw what the Shadowloo guys did last year, with the short notice to organise the tournament, but eventually blowing the roof off in terms of scale of the tournament, I no longer doubt or am surprised by anything they do. They work so hard with their media projects and keeping good relationships with not just the international players, but even the international tournament organisers and managers like Gama No Obura.

So that’s why my jaw hasn’t dropped like last year, because I Believe already.

(Fuck the Lakers.)

So I’m just gonna be there, help with setup and move some chairs around, and just enjoy the hell out of myself.

You should be there too. Tell your friends!

Check Shadowloo.com for more details.

Being a Sentinel Scrub

Boy have I played a lot of Marvel in the last few days!

We had Chris’ Club House on Friday, (which became Fitzroy Club House temporarily). And we had Marvel Massacre just this Sunday.

Luckily I did my laundry on Saturday 😛

Friday

Shadowloo CCH Recap

I’m helping Chris take over the “collecting keys from the Collingwood library before six” duties because he’s actually retiring from the fighting game scene, which is a great loss to the community.

Thanks for everything you’ve done Chris, I’m sure a lot of people are really grateful for all the work you’ve put in, I know I am.

To clarify; I’m just “the guy who picks up the keys”. The actual people who run the tournaments and stuff will be the more experienced heads like Ali and Loki etc.

I had my first taste of how much trouble organising events like CCH could be, when I got there at 530 pm and discovered that due to an error in the system, we were double booked in the same time slot with a theatre group called Bird on Fence.

And since we had been mistakenly shunted to another room, they had been able to book every Friday in the month of March, which would obviously throw a big wrench into running CCH in the coming weeks.

I was feeling at a bit of a loss on what to do; the guy at the counter told me to wait for fifteen minutes; if Bird on Fence did not show up, I could have the keys.

Well of course they showed up!

Luckily Chris came down again to save the day, and talked to the guy at the counter. We compromised and changed our location to Fitzroy library. Why you say?

Because the girls were kind of cute we did it so that we could get our March bookings back. I have to confirm with the Collingwood library later on this week, but I was quite relieved then to hear that we got our bookings back.

Of course then it was a mad scramble. Continue reading

Marvel Massacre: MvC3 Tournament

Couchwarriors and Shadowloo are running the first MvC3 tournament in Melbourne!

It will be on the 27th of February, at the John Curtin hotel on Lygon Street.

Check out the Shadowloo thread for more details.

Personally, I’ve never been to a week 1-2 tournament like this. The game’s brand new, everyone is still trying to learn stuff, and tier lists and top players have yet to be sorted.

I think everyone has an (somewhat) equal chance at this point, and maybe some players looking to make a mark for themselves with Marvel can use this event as a launching board for a long streak of dominance.

I’m still a fledging player, but I’ll be there to support the new Marvel scene.

You should be there too!

TEC weekly show: Pilot

Ali has put together a video done at the Deakin Uni meetup. Focussing on fighting games for now, he hopes to expand the scope to encompass all of Oz’s competitive gaming scene. It’s just a pilot for now, but the real episode 1 will have better editing, titles, storyboards…you get the idea.

For now it’s nice to see some of our local guys get some facetime, and my buddy and co-host Igor finally gets exposed as the “Don of Deakin”.

Check it out, and be sure to suggest names at the Ozhadou thread.

Learning Marvel

It’s been a very interesting two weeks. Marvel broke street date on the 16th of February here in Melbourne, and the first thing I did that day after work was to go back home and spend four hours straight in training room.

I’ve started working in the city, so I get to play at Bluehouse arcade every day at lunch, which is awesome. And actually receiving a salary,is even more awesome. Actually having money is very nice indeed.

I can actually buy things; like an Xbox, finally.

But because I’m new to work, even when there’s ten minutes left on the clock, I don’t start counting the seconds. I sit there thinking, “Wow, people are actually paying me money for every minute I sit here,” and I get so motivated I work until the last second.

But I won’t lie. Last week on Wednesday, I was counting every millisecond until I could run to JB Hi-fi, grab my preordered copy, sprint home like a madman and play Marvel.

The game itself is so addictive. That first day, I couldn’t stop trying new characters. Furiously doing mission mode, watching videos from the SRK Hyper guide, and just trying to cram everything in. I just couldn’t put down my stick. Continue reading

Shadowloo Showdown 2011 announced! June 25th-26th (and I am a Marvel noob)

I still haven’t recovered from the last one, but the Shadowloo guys have announced the date of Shadowloo Showdown 2011: June 25th-26th. Considering the fact that these guys will be going off to EVO a few weeks later, organising SS and getting ready for their trip is going to be a herculean task. But if anyone can do it, it’s my honey bunnies from TEC.

SS 2010 was one of the best times of my life and I wonder who the guys are going to bring over this time. I’m sure with much more time to plan this time around the event will be that much more mind-blowing.

Be sure to check their site as more details are released and check out their trailer.

And another resource which I’m sure won’t need anymore publicity but I will mention because I’m finding it so useful is the SRK MVC3 Hyper Guide.

The amount of work put into it by Keits, Inkblot and James Chen is pretty mindboggling.

I am finding it extremely useful is to scout the whole cast, to wrap my head around their playstyles and core strengths.

I am a complete Marvel noob, and with a cast that big, oftentimes I feel a little lost when it comes to character selection. What does Tron Bonne play like? How do I utilise Amaterasu’s multiple weapons effectively? How does She Hulk’s command run work? Meanwhile everyone around me is playing Dante and Sentinel.

So many questions run through my head when I look at the Marvel character select screen. So by going through the basic video walkthroughs of all the characters in the SRK guide, I now have a much clearer understanding about each character.

Even basic things like whether the character is rushdown, mixup or zoning, I couldn’t really tell until I went through the guide.

A lot of small things were very helpful.

For example, at Ali’s house I saw Toxy trying to use an assist to lengthen a combo off an air juggle. But he had trouble with the timing to get the assist out.

He looked at Sol and said; “Can you not call an assist in the air?”

And Sol said, “I’m not sure, maybe you have to do it just before you land.”

I was listening, and thought; hm that must be it.

But after watching the basic team tutorial I now know that you can only call an assist on the ground.

I know people must think I’m a mega noob now, but hey! Now I know. A lot of little things like that were very helpful to know.

I’ve also wanted to play some of the more esoteric and quirky characters like Amaterasu, Arthur, Tron Bonne, Hulk, Viewtiful Joe, She-Hulk etc.

It would’ve taken me forever to get a sense of how to play the character, but now after watching the videos I can say I like the playstyle of Amaterasu and She-Hulk a lot…but not so much the Hulk, Viewtiful Joe, Tron, Trish etc.

So props to those guys and I hope MVC3 breaks street date in Australia soon!

Ode to Just-S

There probably ain’t no one in the world I love more than Dave right now. So…I gave him a token of my love today at Box Hill.

Dear Dave, what you did just the other day for me

Made me happier… than my very first OCV

And even though I lose and emit pure salty sighs

I still always want- a piece of your Bison pie

For you  I’d buy Marvel, even wait in line

If only you’d be, my one and only

Valentine

John Choi and Hakan option selects

Just thought I’d link up footage of my favourite Ryu player, John Choi, vs Filipino Champ. From SRK Live:

(Check out the rare cmp csmk EX FB (no FADC) into Ultra 1 midscreen at around 20:40.)

And Option-Select.com did a wonderful video detailing Hakan option selects on Honda.

Check it out:

They’re doing wonderful work, please click the link above and leave some feedback on their site.

And in case you’re wondering, the other three characters Oil Dive setups don’t work on are Blanka, Cammy and Dhalsim.

Boxhill Ranbat 27/01/11: Kyle pwns me again

Pschh... I own Muttons. By Shadowloo.

Update: Ozhadou Results thread.

And Shadowloo Recap with videos and stats.

To prepare for the ranbat today, I woke up early to grind in training mode for about 4 hours. I probably should have gone to the arcade to play some matches, but I wasn’t too keen on blowing even more cash at Bluehouse than I have already this week.

I worked on my Sagat safe jumps, did some ambiguous crossup with tatsu option select training (after I missed a few opportunities against Somniac’s Bison at Bluehouse), brushed up on all my combos and watched a ton of South Park as I did it.

Training room is really good for discovering the little tics and small flaws in your execution. I discovered than I tend to release MP+MK too early when I do certain FADC combos such as cmp chp SRK FADC Ultra. So today I worked on making sure that I hold the MP+MK buttons for a split second longer so I don’t screw up the dash.

Then I had some foul-tasting leftover lasagna, and headed over to the city to meet Andrew and Andre.

They met me at Flinders Street Station, and I notice THK following along and generally harassing them.

Unfortunately for THK, when we got on the train to Boxhill, the train was extremely packed. So we had to walk all the way back to the last carriage and squeeze in. I looked around at Andrew and Andre and said, “Hey. Where’s Tian?” Continue reading

Playing Evil Ryu at Bluehouse

I really wanted to go to the Evil Ryu/Oni Akuma-only 2 v 2 tournament at Box Hill today, but I could not make it… because I had to make my missus a lasagna. Oh well.

But I did get to finally try out Evil Ryu today at Bluehouse!

I showed up just past noon with my buddy Pedro. Sat down, plunked in my two bucks and selected Evil Ryu.

I feel pretty excited; he looks really cool on the select screen and there are already a bunch of people playing him and Oni Akuma in the arcade.

He moves a lot differently from Ryu. His back and forward dashes are definitely different, and I wonder about his walk speed. He’s also taller than normal Ryu, which makes me wonder if his hitbox is fatter as well.

No matter. I’m up against an E. Honda player that I don’t recognise. Continue reading
